Apple Computer Joins CalConnect

Move Escalates Focus on Open, Standards-Based Calendaring and Scheduling Protocols

Apple Computer, Inc. has publicly announced its membership in The Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium (www.calconnect.org), as well as an open source implementation of Apple’s calendaring server, at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference this week in San Francisco. The announcement follows closely on the addition of The Boeing Company and Timebridge to the roster of vendor members, which now includes eleven companies. CalConnect’s membership also includes open-source foundations, a research facility and thirteen universities.

“Apple has been a significant contributor to the development of CalDAV and other calendaring standards, and to the work of the Consortium,” noted Dave Thewlis, Executive Director of the Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium. “Apple’s release of its new iCAL calendaring server to the open source community demonstrates a solid commitment to open standards and to interoperable calendaring and scheduling, which are keystones of CalConnect’s mission.” Apple has made source to iCal Server in Mac OS X Server Leopard available.

Apple will serve as host for the Seventh Roundtable of The Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium, together with a CalConnect Interoperability Test Event (C.I.T.E.) on September 26-29, 2006. The Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium (www.calconnect.org)

The Consortium focuses on the interoperable exchange of calendaring and scheduling information between dissimilar programs, platforms, and technologies. The mission is to provide mechanisms to allow calendaring and scheduling methodologies to interoperate to promote understanding of these methodologies, and to enable calendaring and scheduling tools and applications to enter the mainstream of computing.
